Wellington Mayor Justin Lester, wearing a tiger onesie and skulling a pint of Tuatara Helles, says the party will still go on. “Wellington might have lost the Sevens, but we still have Beervana, and now our two best parties will combine as one – dress up, drink up, hook up!”

Beervana manager Beth Brash, speaking from her office at Table 2 in Golding’s Free Dive, says she’s very excited to welcome Sevens fans to the craft beer event. “When Beervana started it was just for a bunch of weirdos, and as it’s grown it has become a bit of a sausage fest. Groups of middle aged men in matching Hawaiian shirts are a lot of fun but we need young blood, we want more women to attend, and we want to bring the party to the beer.”

Brash says there will be competitions for the best costumes, and every hour the PA will be playing NZ classics such as  “Why does love do this to me?” for a general sing along. Brash says the new event will combine the best of both events. “A Giant Jagermeister kiddie castle will be erected on the playing field for the planned family zone and a craft beer dunk tank will be front and centre in the party zone”

Wisebuys owner’s have also lauded the partnership, “We were really worried about what to do with the 10 container loads of costumes we had for the Sevens, we are thankful to the Mayor and Beervana for such progressive thinking”
